Neighbourhood's minister, Wayne Walder, and member Beverly Carr are leading journeys for UUs to various parts of the world - journeys with a difference. These trips are fundraisers for Neighbourhood while at the same time providing an opportunity for UUs to travel together to learn about and experience different cultures and traditions, while gaining insights to take back home.

In 1996, Beverly began organizing trips for Unitarians. They travelled to England, Hungary, Czech Republic, Spain, and France and met Unitarians in those countries.

India, Santa Fe, Peru, and Turkey had a bit of a different focus, but the dynamics of taking a journey with 'fellow travellers' adds a special something to the experience. Unitarians are typically "go with the flow" individuals and relaxed travellers.  They like surprises and are lots of fun to travel with.  She would be happy to talk to you about these journeys, which promise to be exhilarating, with good company, enchanting moments, and visual treats.  bgcarr@rogers.com

Wayne leads those interested in meditations and reflections every day.  Having led Unitarians to India, Santa Fe, Peru, Turkey, and Belize, he found that getting the group together every day to pause and reflect gave them cohesion and focus. Wayne teaches meditation with a combination of humour, reason, and respect for religious tradition.

From Wayne: Our perceptions will be different when we travel.   We will be away from our day to day lives and we can experiment with how we see the world.   We will have a chance to look a little more closely at people and things.  We can let our attention move easily from one interest to another.   We may become interested in something and we can hold that interest longer than we might here at home.  Being aware of how we see things is a wonderful practice.

Why Travel? Often I feel I go to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am. There is no mystery about why this should be so. Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends, your daily routines, ... you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that his having the experience. That’s not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating. -- Michael Crichton in Travels
