Our Music: Make Time To Listen To Music

by Susanne Maziarz, Music Director at Neighbourhood

I used to listen to music a lot. Daily. When I was in school, I was so turned on by all of the new kinds of music and new sounds that I was hearing that sitting and listening to music in my headphones without any other distractions was essential. It put me in touch with myself: my heart, my soul, my feelings, my preferences, my aspirations and my connection to human beings from other times and places.

Now? Although I am making music daily as my vocation, I rarely take the time to sit and listen to music, to fully immerse myself in the sounds and patterns and feelings and textures and insights that it provides.

So, for this month’s theme of introspection, I challenge you and myself to make time daily or weekly to do nothing else but listen to music. Not while doing the dishes, not over dinner … just listen. We have practiced active, attentive listening in every service at Neighbourhood in May. I invite you to take the active listening practice to your home stereo/headphones. What do you hear?
